CASE STUDIES

Chelsea Flower Show

Challenged by a client to provide somewhere where their guests could enjoy dinner after the ‘hurley-burley’ of an evening at the Chelsea Flower Show we provided the suggestion of a marquee in the garden of a private house in Chelsea.  The idea was accepted and we provided a secluded, relaxed venue for 30 guests within 10 minutes of the Royal Hospital where a champagne reception preceded a delightful summer dinner.  Private caterers provided a light and imaginative menu and our client personally chose their wines.

Pro-Am Tennis

For a number of years now we have co-ordinated a pro-am tennis tournament at the Harbour Club in conjunction with hospitality at the Royal Albert Hall during the Black Rock Masters Tennis Tournament in December.  Our client provides a group of 12 players made up of home-team’ and guests who then play a ‘round-robin’ tournament against a selection of Seniors Tour players that have included Boris Becker, John McEnroe and Peter Mcnamara in previous years.  Following an afternoon of tennis the players are joined by further guests in two boxes at the Royal Albert Hall where they enjoy dinner and an evening of Masters Tennis.

Corporate Trip to Barbados

In 2006 we were asked to design a 7-day trip to the West Indies for 10 guests to coincide with the ICC World Cup Cricket Tournament in April 2007.  Using England match dates as a planning base we constructed a programme that included two cricket matches in Bridgetown, golf at the Westmoreland with Mike Gatting and John Edrich, Open ’60 yacht sailing, polo, horse-racing and a reception in the grounds of one of their villas for some of the England players and other guests from the cricket fraternity.  The accommodation was in two villas in Queensfort, Barbados and when not eating in the villas the group ate out at The Cliff and Daphne’s.  To provide a mid-week interlude the group flew to Bequia for one night.

Wine Tastings

Over the last four years a client has asked us to co-ordinate evening wine-tastings for 18 guests in London.  We have used the Walbrook, the Apothecaries Hall and the cellars of the Stafford Hotel and have employed the services of wine merchants, Masters of Wine (Nancy Gilchrist and John Downes), professional wine tasting businesses and sommeliers.  We have always themed the evening by focusing on wine regions, varieties or production methods and have always made the tasting competitive. A buffet dinner has followed the tasting and guests usually extend the evening at the hotel bar or local hostelry in order to put their new found skills to test.

A Trafalgar Dinner

The bi-centenary of Admiral Lord Nelson’s death at the battle of Trafalgar took place in 2005.  A client of ours decided to celebrate our greatest Naval hero’s death in style and asked Any Event to co-ordinate the event.  We created a Trafalgar Dinner to remember at the Admiral’s House, The Old Naval College, Greenwich.  The evening started with all guests being taken by boat from Westminster Pier to Greenwich where they were piped ashore prior to a full salute by the Guard of Honour of the Connaught Rangers.  Rear-Admiral Loughran CB took the salute and later proposed the toast to Nelson’s ‘Immortal Memory’.  50 guests enjoyed the Parade of Beef, Ships of the Line and joined in a rousing rendition of some well-known sea-shanties to end the evening.  During dinner a portrait of Admiral Lord Nelson was auctioned for the benefit of a Royal Naval charity.

Glyndebourne Opera

For a number of years we have been asked to enhance evenings at Glyndebourne with the provision of an ‘al fresco’ dinner in the grounds of Glyndebourne.  Using a talented, small catering company and a friend who ‘knows’ Glyndebourne we set up a table for 8 guests on the Upper Circle Terrace.  There they enjoyed a glass of champagne before the first act and then returned for dinner during the long interval.  Knowledge of the grounds and of the timetable that is peculiar to Glyndebourne has allowed us to perfect a programme that ensures a relaxed and memorable experience.

Shooting at Kirby House, Inkpen, Berkshire

Clients of ours who enjoy their shooting prefer to preserve the day to savour the sport and spend the night before catching up with their guests and developing business relationships over ‘red meat and red wine’.  Any Event has been asked to select estates around the country where this format can be achieved.  Kirby House, belonging to the Astor family, is a perfect example of where this can be offered.  Guests can stay in the house and enjoy dinner with the Astors before retiring to en-suite bedrooms in this exquisite Queen Anne house.  Following a traditional breakfast, a briefing in front of the house, guns are often led across the lawns and into the park for the first drive.  Mixed partridge and pheasant days in amongst the Berkshire Downs along with the exceptional hospitality offered by the Astors are difficult to match.

Company Trip to Le Touquet

A few years ago we were asked to provide a client with some ideas of how they might thank their employees for their efforts during the year and celebrate their successes.  The event had to provide everyone with the opportunity to ‘let their hair down’ but also aid the development of working relationships between the various departments.  The result of our efforts was a weekend in Le Touquet staying at the Westminster Hotel.  Eurostar and coach transfers got the group there and back and whilst there we arranged a dinner-dance in La Philae Café on the Friday, a lunch for the board on the Saturday at L’Auberge de la Grenouilliere’ with dinner in the hotel that evening.  On Sunday we put on a grand sand castle building competition on the beach and some beach games before lunch.

Newmarket Races

One of our particular specialties is the co-ordination of bespoke days at the races.  Piers Lawson, our Managing Director, was once, many years ago, an indifferent National Hunt amateur.  Silver does not weigh down his mantelpiece but he does have a very comprehensive knowledge of the racing industry.  This expertise has been put to good use to provide our clients with an exceptional service.  A day at Newmarket Races, to take but one example, can be enhanced with yard tours, visits to studs or Tattersalls Sales, breakfast with trainers, visits to the weighing room, racing personalities giving box talks, betting advice and a very personal approach to the day.  We believe that a day at the races is one of the most effective ways of entertaining clients and we further believe that we can organise it better than most.
